Fedora specialises in marketing for smaller law firms
The legal services market will change radically with the implementation of the Legal Services Act 2007 in October. This will see the introduction of Alternative Business Structures creating new types of law firm by permitting ownership of law firms by a wide range of business types.
For existing providers of legal services are two major challenges – new competition (in certain commoditisable areas of law such as conveyancing, accident claims etc) and a new regulatory framework.
The new competition will create new distribution channels for legal services utilising their retail premises, providing online legal services etc. The AA, Co-op, Halifax and DAS have already started to market their new services.
We will see high street law firms merging or partnering with other professional services businesses (e.g. estate agents, accountants etc) to create one-stop shops for professional services as well as alliances between existing providers and ‘high street brands’.
Given the above situation a planned approach to marketing and your communications strategy is the key. Not just saying ‘we need an advert, deadline yesterday’ but effectively using the internet and online networking tools to greatly enhance the presence of your firm in your target markets, as well as your firm’s reputation.
The brand ‘solicitor’ is still a valuable one – the implied trust and relationship that develops between a client and their legal advisor should be a great source of competitive advantage.
